After stumbling across something known as the 50 Book Pledge shortly after New Years, I have decided to partake in the challenge. 50 books, anything and everything I have ever wanted to read. This blog will keep track of my progress on this challenge, as well as serve as a place to store my reviews and ramblings on any and all things literary.

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once.

#50BookPledge

As my family and friends know, I am an avid reader. I’m pretty sure that avid doesn’t really do it justice, but for all intents and purposes: we’ll stick with that term. When not in school (I’m a 4th year University student, doing a specialization in Russian History), I am always reading something. I usually have 3 or 4 books on the go at any given point.

So this year I decided to do something different, and set a challenge for myself. Thanks to my Twitter feed, I stumbled across this: the 50 Book Pledge. I pledge to read 50 books in one year. 50 books I have always wanted to read, but never had the time (made the time), took the initiative, whatever. 50 seems like an easy number, but in truth, balancing school, work, a social life and this project is quite a juggling act. However: the 50 Book Pledge is something that I view as a gift to myself, over a commitment. The time I take to read a new chapter in each book is a gift, something I give back to myself after a long day of school. In short: the 50 Book Pledge is saving my sanity this semester, one page at a time!

I’ve also decided to track my efforts via a blog: this blog to be precise. Here you’ll be able to find the master list of what I’ve been reading, see the list of what I want to get through, and should anyone out there, feel moved: suggest something. I’d love to surpass the original 50 by midsummer.

I highly encourage everyone to check this project out. Some people might scoff, saying that they read more than enough already, or say this is a joke. It’s not. Literacy is something that we should encourage in our family, friends, society and world. Books have the ability to transport you, to a different time, place, world, anything. I’m just saying, it’s a promise to yourself that you won’t regret!
